What is the South Coast Arts Trail?
The South Coast Arts Trail is a free, self-guided arts weekend across Wellington's south coast suburbs. Over two days, local artists open their studios and exhibit in community venues, giving visitors a chance to explore creative work, meet the people behind it, and discover a part of Wellington that's well worth the trip.
The trail is walkable for most people, bike-friendly, and accessible by public transport for most studios. Whether you're browsing, buying, or simply curious, there's no set route and no ticket required.
Now in its fifth year, the trail celebrates and promotes artists that live, work, or have strong connections to the South Coast of Wellington. It is organised by volunteers who live and work on the south coast, with support from local sponsors and our parent not-for-profit organisation, the South Coast Business and Promotions Association, which supports South Coast businesses and community.

Please explain the Health and Safety requirements of opening my studio or home to the public for the South Coast Arts Trail?
As the South Coast Arts Trail team are not able to be on site at every venue, or responsible for private homes or venues, we are following the guidelines of the NZ Health and Safety at Work Act (2015). This states that art studio owners/operators have a duty to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health and safety of visitors. This includes identifying and managing risks such as slips, trips and falls, and exposure to any hazardous materials.
Public venues are also required to adhere to these guidelines. The principle is to take all reasonable steps to make sure visitors to your home are safe and secure, and made aware of any hazards that could cause harm. Please note, a Health and Safety checklist is included in the registration information, and if you would like a copy, please contact us.
