South Coast Studio is fast becoming a creative hub in Island Bay, offering a welcoming space for people to learn, create, and connect through art. We run weekly classes, weekend workshops in other media and crafts, and art and yoga retreats in scenic locations around Aotearoa. Regular workshops include watercolour, life drawing, drawing, painting — and soon, open studio sessions and art support. We also run special seasonal workshops for holidays and events.

Founded by JoElle Gragilla, a practising artist with a strong background in art education, SCS was built on her passion for sharing art with others. The focus is on practical learning in a relaxed setting. Whether you're picking up a brush for the first time or returning to a creative practice, SCS offers a place to switch off from the daily grind, build skills, and enjoy the mental reset that comes with making art.

Creative activity has been shown to reduce stress, improve focus, and release endorphins — something many participants say they notice after a class.
