Seema Singh & Pritika Narayan

Location

Wellington South Baptist Church Hall, 284 The Parade, Island Bay

Medium

Ceramics/Mixed media/Painting

Seema is a Wellington-based mixed media artist originally from the Fiji Islands. Her artwork draws inspiration from her ancestor’s lived experiences and her background in Geography. She works with acrylics, watercolour pencils, metallic pens, traditional materials like turmeric, sindhoor, jute, and saree fabric to create textured, collage-style paintings. These works tell the stories of Girmit women, our foremothers, whose histories are often fragmented and emotionally charged.

Alongside Seema’s work you’ll also see thoughtful ceramic sculptures by Pritika Narayan. Her pottery honours these same Girmit women, portraying them with their heads held high, symbols of strength, dignity, and grace in the face of hardship. Through their combined art forms, Seema and Pritika aim to pay tribute to their ancestors and preserve their legacy. Their work is both a celebration and an act of remembrance.
