St Sava Serbian Orthodox Church
Location
75 The Parade, Island Bay
Medium
Iconography
At the end of World War II, many Serbian families arrived in New Zealand between 1948 and 1952 to begin new lives. In Wellington, the Serbian community initially worshipped at Russian and Greek churches.
The long-held dream of establishing their own Church Community became a reality in 1968, when the original St Francis de Sales Church (built in 1906) was purchased. Following extensive repairs and renovations, the first Divine Liturgy was served in 1969—celebrated at what was then the farthest Serbian Orthodox altar from the Fatherland.
The church’s interior is noted for its extraordinary beauty, highlighted by a remarkable chandelier with 106 light bulbs. Iconography work has been carried out by the exceptionally talented Anton Markarov.
Today, St Sava’s continues to be nurtured by the dedication of volunteers and community members. Father Predrag warmly invites you to visit.
